Introduction to Public History

Ashley and Taylor worked at Newlin Grist Mill while fulfilling requirements of a University of Delaware Public History Internship course. Their joint goal was to explore options available to public history professionals while gaining hands-on experience in museums. They completed an artifact inventory of the Miller’s House using collections-management software. They also participated in several smaller activities in support of educational programming.

Historic Structure Report

Anne worked on a historic structure report of the Newlin Grist Mill. The project included measuring drawings; documenting construction methods, materials, and past uses; creating a timeline of renovations and maintenance; and compiling the information into a report. This internship provided an opportunity for Anne to combine her interests in structural engineering and historic buildings, while creating a report that supports the interpretation, maintenance, and future preservation of the mill. Anne was an engineering major at Swarthmore College.
