Program Hours

Generally, field trips are available between the hours of 9:30 am and 1:30 pm. If you need to arrange a special time, don’t hesitate to call 610.459.2359 or email

Price and Payment

Fields trips range in price from $7 to $10 per student depending on the program and activities. Please call 610.459.2359 or email to ask specific questions about pricing. Our preferred methods of payment are a check made out to Newlin Grist Mill or cash. We also accept Visa, Mastercard, and Discover.

We are currently in the process of applying for funding and seeking sponsorships for low income schools. If you would like to help us fund field trips for low income students, please click here.

Age and Number of Students

We offer field trips to students in preschool through high school. We can accommodate field trips for groups sizes of 10 students and up. Groups that have less than 10 students will be charged a flat tour rate determined by the program and activities they schedule.

Student Dress

Please have your students dress accordingly to the weather forecast. Ask your students and adult chaperones to wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers. All field trips – even historic programs and tours – require a significant amount of walking or standing.

ADA Accessibility

Because the structures at Newlin Grist Mill are historic, not all of them are ADA accessible. However, we make every opportunity to provide unique learning opportunities for all students. Please let us know in advance of any ADA or special needs issues so we can prepare in advance.

Students, parents, and teachers are welcome to take pictures during their field trips. However, we ask that students refrain from taking photographs in the middle of a tour, demonstration, or activity.

Because we will divide your group into smaller groups (ideally 10 students per group), we require 1 adult per 10 children. Teachers and aides are included in this count and are free of charge. Additional adults are welcome to come, but make group sizes bigger. We encourage groups to stick to the required number adults so the focus of the activities remain on the students. Additional adults pay the same rate per person as the students.

There are two parking lots available for cars and buses. The first is directly in front of the Newlin Grist Mill Visitor Center. The second lot is located directly next door near the log cabin. Parking is free of charge.

Picnic tables are located throughout the park. Please use the trash bags provided by Newlin Grist Mill for all trash. Newlin Grist Mill does not have water fountains or soda/water machines. Make sure students bring plenty of water, especially if it is forecasted to be a hot day. Lunch times may have to be staggered to better accommodate large groups. In inclement weather, indoor facilities are available. However, groups may have to be divided amongst multiple indoor locations.

Bathrooms are located at the Visitor Center.

Snow and Rain

Field trips are held rain or shine. Many of our field trip programs take place outside and cannot be moved inside in the event of rain. If necessary, we can reschedule field trips, but it is important to keep in mind that dates in May and June quickly fill up with other field trips. In the event of a weather-related school closing due to snow, ice, or hurricane, Newlin Grist Mill follows the school closing policy of the Garnet Valley School District.

Gift Shop

The Newlin Grist Mill gift shop has items, such as colonial toys and games and stone ground corn meal, for sale. Children can shop in the gift shop during lunch if they are accompanied by an adult. Because the gift shop is very small, we ask that small groups rotate through the shop.

Message to Our Community

In light of current conditions, Newlin Grist Mill continues to be closed as follows:

  • The NGM Visitor Center, Archive, Blacksmith Shop, Millwright Shop, and public restrooms remain closed;

  • All tours, programs and events have been postponed or cancelled during this period;

  • Pond Fishing will remain closed until further notice;

  • Rentals are being cancelled for this period of time;

  • There will be no Volunteer Wednesday Workdays;

  • The trails will remain open, but parking is limited; and we ask that everyone be mindful of social distancing when on the property.

Decisions concerning additional closings will follow based on the developing situation. Please check back for updates.

While the trails at Newlin Grist Mill remain accessible while the site is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we do want to remind everyone of a few things:

  • Continue to observe proper social distancing when you are on the trails. If you are ill or have been around anyone who is ill or has been exposed to the virus, please remain at home. If you arrive and find that the parking lot is crowded, please postpone your visit to another time.

  • Please remember that all dogs must be on a leash that is held securely by the owner at all times. This is a township law, and it is to protect the health and safety of all park visitors (human and canine) and the wildlife in the park.

  • The park contains unique habitats that are home to sensitive plants and animals, some of which are being monitored through ongoing scientific surveys.  Please stay on the trails to avoid disturbances (wading, dip netting, collecting, rock throwing etc.) that could damage wildlife and vegetation.

  • Remember that collecting of any kind, including plants and animals, is prohibited in the park.

We appreciate your understanding and support during this challenging time.
